      About our Testing+Evaluation Capabilities

SUPERSTRUCTURES‘ testing+evaluation capabilities have been used by local, state, and federal agencies and by sole practitioners and national firms. When professionals, contractors, and owners disagree, SUPERSTRUCTURES is brought in to objectively provide answers to the most difficult problems.

Volume of projects and assignments is not necessarily a measure of proficiency – but in this case it is. Exemplary performance on an assignment attracts more assignments. More assignments mean more opportunities to learn, more feedback from the field, and even better performance on the next assignment. It is rare to encounter something we have not seen before. Nonetheless, we approach each assignment with a fresh eye and genuine enthusiasm.

SUPERSTRUCTURES Testing+Evaluation is integral to the overall mission of SUPERSTRUCTURES’ dedication to the preservation of buildings and infrastructure. Initiated to advance quality and service to our existing clients, it is has blossomed by providing a full range of Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation (NDT&E) and Materials Testing Laboratory services, and independent consultations to our colleague engineering and architecture firms, as well as directly to building owners and contractors. Our goals are to assist you in solving your problems and helping you impress, persuade, and keep your clients.

Our work embraces building structures, infrastructure, facades, roofs, windows, plazas, and garages, and the full complement of materials – from landmark terra cotta to reinforced concrete to high performance curtain wall systems.

If you would also like to avail yourself of the expertise of SUPERSTRUCTURES for your restoration and repair project, please visit our full-service website by clicking here.

Since 2007, our conservation and NDT&E studios have completed hundreds of projects and assignments – on time and within budget – making us a favorite of the region’s most respected and demanding agencies and firms.

We take pride in the excellence of our staff, the caliber of our clients, the diversity of our portfolio, and our firm-wide enthusiasm for the work we do.

The quality of our field and laboratory testing is ensured by a quality management system compliant with ASTM E543 and C1093 standards, which regulates our processes, ensures compliance with standards and regular maintenance and calibration of our equipment, and provides the mechanism for continuous improvement of the clarity, accuracy, and efficiency of our reports.

Innovative testing protocols and procedures are constantly being introduced, offering advantages in accuracy and precision. Sometimes a new test is perfect for a 300-year-old monument. We relentlessly seek out and apply the latest proven test methodologies on behalf of our clients and their projects.

Our full time research and development (R&D) effort keeps us at the forefront of developing technologies. We maintain two dedicated laboratories in which we construct prototypes of devices, and conduct trials of new techniques and methods.

Our in-house NDT&E laboratory includes an electronics laboratory for building prototype devices and various setups for testing equipment and analyzing procedures. Areas of research include structural health monitoring using wireless remote monitoring sensors, new applications of active thermography, and new leak detection techniques.

Our in-house Materials Testing Laboratory is equipped for ASTM standard services as well as research on the characteristics and performance of building materials, products, and processes. Areas of research include the effectiveness and appropriateness of cleaning and consolidation products and long-term environmental effects on conservation materials.

A dedicated R&D capability is highly unusual for a conventional professional firm, but it’s consistent with our commitment to advancement of the profession. Our efforts have been recognized by the National Science Foundation, which has awarded us grants to underwrite our research.

Although our work is primarily local, our reputation is international. We’ve hosted delegations of construction professionals from as far away as Japan, who have been attracted by our reputation for advanced technology and systems. They learn from us, and we learn from them, so that our clients benefit from the best that the world has to offer.

Expertise must be continually nurtured and cultivated. SUPERSTRUCTURES is a nexus of education in the art and science of restoration.

At our on-site training center we regularly host training sessions and seminars for staff and clients, including demonstrations and presentations from expert practitioners. We have covered a range of topics that includes cleaning, testing and evaluation of steel, concrete, brick, copper, cast stone, silicone sealants, roofing, stucco systems, and terra cotta.

SUPERSTRUCTURES is an AIA registered provider of Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) required for registered professionals in the State of New York. In the fifteen years of the program’s existence, representatives of hundreds of organizations have earned thousands of CEU’s.

Beyond our internal programs, each employee participates in outside seminars and convocations sponsored by industry organizations. In many cases, we act as presenters and speakers at these events.
